The brief

Sixteen affordable artist studios on a granite quarry floor that had been abandoned since 1974.

What we did

We treated the quarry wall as the fourth elevation. Studios line the north edge in a single low bar so every unit gets even north light and a door that opens straight onto rock.

Construction is deliberately plain, blockwork, steel and polycarbonate, so the running costs stay inside what an artist can actually pay.

Outcome

Fully occupied since 2022, with a waiting list that has never dropped below thirty.
