The project
The brief
A parish council 350 km above the Arctic Circle asked for a chapel that could hold sixty people and mark the return of the sun.
What we did
The plan is a simple rectangle rotated 7 degrees off the site grid so that the altar window catches the first direct sunlight after the polar night, on 21 January.
Concrete outside, oak inside, one window. Everything else was removed.
Outcome
Completed 2024. The congregation has grown by a third since opening.
